Beat Sweater Part 3

The Beat Sweater by Katrin Schneider is a flattering stranded yoke sweater that is knit from the top down in DK weight yarn. It is a stylish yet simple introduction to stranded yoke sweater knitting. For an extra challenge, once you have knit your sweater, you can choose to steek it to turn it into a cardigan. If you are not familiar, steeking is a technique where you cut your sweater open and transform it from a pullover to a cardigan.

Please note, this class will meet every other week for 4 sessions.

Skills Required: Comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, working in the round, and binding off

Stumped by short rows? Want to see the differences between methods? Come check out three ways to shape your work using short rows. There will be samples of each technique (wrap and turn, shadow wraps, and Sunday short rows). You will learn how to do each one by creating a simple swatch. This is also a great session to help prepare for our sock classes!

Weaving

Learn to create a beautiful and colorful wall hanging in this beginner workshop with local artist and designer, Amber Powers. You will learn the basic skills of warping, weaving, changing colors, and other tips and tricks for adding interest, including Rya knots, making shapes, loops and bubbles. You will take home a wooden loom for completing your weaving. No prior experience is necessary.

Materials Needed: At least 100 yards each of three colors in bulky or super-bulky yarn, and darning needle from Yarn Shop Santa Cruz.

Circular Technique Tasting

If you’ve never tried knitting in the round, or want to try out a new method, come by our technique “tasting” during your lunch hour and try out three different methods for knitting in the round. You will have the opportunity to pick up and knit on already-started samples using magic loop, double-pointed-needles, and flexi-flips, and find the method that is most comfortable for you. After trying out each one in fingering and worsted weight yarn, you will have the confidence to knit that hat or pair of socks you’ve been wanting!

In this class, we will cover the basics of Ravlery’s extensive website for knitters and crocheters. You will learn how to search for projects more effectively and explore yarn choices. We will go over how to create your project page, and more.

Prework: If you do not yet have a Ravelry account, please do so before class; it’s free and simple, just go to www.ravlery.com. If you already have an account, please make sure to know your username and password.

Candlepower Sock Class

With dreary winter weather not letting up, it is the perfect time to learn to knit yourself a pair of cozy wool socks! And “Candlepower” sock pattern is the perfect place to start!

This class will walk you through all three elements of a sock - the cuff, turning the heel, and the toe. You will have one finished sock after the class and all the skills to work the second sock on your own! In addition to sock structure, you will learn simple lace knitting and how to follow a chart.

Note the suggested prerequisites! If you haven’t done short rows or tried various circular techniques, one or both of these classes can give you a head start on skills for this class!

Skills Required: Able to cast on, knit, purl, knit in the round and bind off.

Skills Covered: Lace, Turning a heel, kitchener stitch

Suggested Prerequisites: Short Rows, Circular Technique Tasting

Materials:

  • 350-400 yards of sock weight yarn (100 gram skein should do)

  • “Candlepower” sock pattern which is available for free on Ravelry. Please come to class with the pattern printed

  • Size US 1.5 or 2 needle with 40” or 47” cable or DPNs

Session 1 (March 30) - Casting On and Cuff

  • Casting on, knitting in the round, ribbing, starting the candle flame pattern

  • Homework: Continue in the pattern until it is time to start the heel.

Session 2 (April13) - Turning The Heel

  • Slip stitch, short rows, picking up stitches, decreasing

  • Homework: Continue in the pattern until it is time to start the toe

Session 3 (April 27) - Toe and Finishing

  • Decreasing, kitchener stitch, weaving in ends

  • Homework: Start the next sock!

The shawl uses a minimum of 400 yards of fingering weight yarn but you may make it longer if you so choose!

Short Rows Workshop

Stumped by short rows? Want to see the differences between methods? Come check out three ways to shape your work using short rows. There will be samples of each technique (wrap and turn, shadow wraps, and Sunday short rows), and you will learn how to do each one in this lunchtime workshop. This is also a great session to help prepare for our upcoming sock classes!

Instructor: Betsy

Cost: $25

Skills Required: Basic knitting knowledge (knit and purl stitch)

Materials: 100 yards of fingering, DK, or worsted weight yarn in any color from Yarn Shop Santa Cruz and corresponding needles of any type (straight, circular, or dpns)

Note: This is not a class. It is an informal gathering so we can enjoy each other's company and stitch together. Instruction is not offered but usually other stitchers are willing to get you through a tough spot!
