"The Gift" Baby Sweater - Part 1

"The Gift" Baby Sweater - Part 1

Baby sweaters are the perfect way to get comfortable with making garments. Using all of the same techniques as you would for an adult size, baby sweaters allow you to learn more in a shorter amount of time. “The Gift” is a sweet top down cardigan with a lace yoke and lace detailing at the hem and cuffs. You will learn how to read a lace pattern as it pertains to garment construction. We will also go over how to pick up stitches for sleeves, how to create button holes, and how to sew on buttons.

First Session: We will begin the sweater, covering the lace yoke and getting you comfortable reading the lace pattern for the hem of the sweater.

Second Session: We will go over how to pick up stitches for the sleeves. Additionally, we will discuss button bands and sewing on buttons.

Instructor: Casey

Cost: $55

Skills Required: Able to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off; you must also be comfortable knitting in the round on a small circumference. Some experience knitting lace is recommended but not necessary; our Lace Basics or Next Step Lace classes are perfect to get you comfortable with lace!

Knitting patterns and charts can seem like a foreign language, making it frustrating to follow along. In this workshop, you will learn the symbols and strategy of most knitting patterns, how to decipher a visual chart, and how to translate the chart pattern to your actual knitting. We will be knitting through the free Heart Dishcloth pattern during the class, but if you have a pattern you're stumped on, bring it with you and we'll see if we can decipher it!

For whatever sweater problem you may have, come to the Sweater Support Group! This group will meet every other Tuesday evening on a drop-in basis, so no need to sign up ahead of time. This is a place to knit with other sweater knitters and get the help you need to finish your project.

Add some versatility to your projects with a repertoire of cast on and bind off techniques. We will be tackling three different methods of each in this 2-session class. For the first session, we will go over cast on methods: cable cast on, German twisted cast on, and picot cast on. We will cover bind off methods in the second session: i-cord bind off, stretchy bind off, and picot bind off.

Our October project is "Beloved Berlin" by Isabell Kraemer, a cowl! This long three-color cowl is cleverly knit with no wrong side. The pattern has everything you need to keep your interest and is still a relaxing knit. Wear it long or wrap it around twice comfortably. For a super cozy cowl, choose some of our alpaca or llama yarn in fingering weight.

Intro to Knitting: Knitting in the Round

If you've just learned to knit, or are coming back from a knitting break, take the next steps in your journey with this class. You will have time to practice tension and the basic knit and purl stitches in a circular sampler cowl. The cowl will include 2x2 ribbing and garter stitch. You will also learn how to knit in the round on a circular needle and how to make a stretchy bind-off.
